The family business and its history: 1864-2024. A tradition of construction culture for over 160 years: In Kempen on the Lower Rhine, the origins and foundations of the family business are visible everywhere.

MAY 2024: Exhibition in the foyer of the Kempen City Hall, Buttermarkt

When: May 7th to 30th 2024

Opening hours Rathaus Kempen: Mo. to Th. 8 a.m. – 6 p.m and Fr. 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This exhibition documents the work of the Kempener entrepreneurial family Schmitz. Since its beginnings in 1864, it has realized countless projects: churches, monasteries, hospitals, and a cinema; factories and industrial buildings; in Krefeld, the main building of the Sparkasse and the main customs office. But above all: thousands of apartments. This includes the restoration of numerous architectural monuments. Understandably, only a selection can be shown, with a focus on our hometown of Kempen. Here, Schmitz buildings have significantly shaped the cityscape.

WE LOOK FORWARD TO YOUR VISIT!

With kind support from Dr. Hans Kaiser and the city of Kempen.

„We have remained committed to traditional architecture to this day.“

Ralf Schmitz

The long-term responsibility to contribute to the face of a city, to a developed neighborhood, is taken seriously. “The facade of a house, its face, is not a private matter but a public one,” says Ralf Schmitz, and his son Axel Martin adds, “We believe that a new building should not be a foreign body in its environment.” This is achieved because only carefully selected and very renowned offices are commissioned for the project designs in Kempen, Düsseldorf, Cologne, Berlin, Hamburg, and soon in Cologne. Their visions harmonize perfectly with the high standards of the traditional company, whose roots in construction culture go back a long way.
